African Black Soap (Review)

I've struggled with Eczema and other allergies for much of my life. I have good years and bad years. Last year was definitely a bad one. Beginning around June my body exploded in rash. At its worst, I found myself headed home from the emergency room with a prescription for Prednisone, which not only didn't permanently nix the problem, but also completely knocked me out of the running game for weeks with weight gain and extreme fatigue.

An outdoor / trail running lifestyle (my race reports) can be tough on the skin, exposing an athlete to any number of allergens, and the products used to wash those allergens away. Through the process of elimination I eventually got a handle on the problem by making changes to my diet as well as the soaps and cleansers used around my home. One soap that proved especially beneficial was African Black Soap Eczema & Psoriasis Therapy from Shea Moisture.

Shea Moisture African Black Soap Eczema & Psoriasis Therapy is a grainy, pitch black, mildly sweet smelling soap based on the traditional soap of Ghana, Africa which was made from the ashes of plantain skins and a small number of other local ingredients. I've found that this mild soap leaves my skin feeling less 'raw' and dry than other soaps, lessens the redness of my outbreaks and does not cause new ones.

Shea Moisture African Black Soap has been "Americanized," somewhat to be less rough / chunky than more traditional examples of the style, and includes additional beneficial natural oils and extracts used in the treatment of Eczema and Psoriasis. But of course Shea Butter remains at the heart of its formulation.
