Hop Ranch Imperial IPA (review)

Beer Review #109

A couple of days after the Hyner View Trail Challenge 25k (race report) my legs are still feeling pretty tender, so i thought it would be a good day to dive into a four pack of Hop Ranch Imperial IPA from the dependable Victory Brewing Co. of Downingtown Pa. Back in February it was announced that Victory was "merging" with Southern Tier Brewing under the umbrella company 'Artisanal Brewing Ventures.' You can read all about that here.

Hop Ranch as an Imperial India Pale Ale brewed with Mosaic and Azacca hops. Hop Ranch pours pale-golden with a faint chill haze, and respectable head of soft, "leggy" foam.

The 9.0% alcohol by volume in each 12 ounce bottle is masked well on the back of the throat by a lingering, classic piney hop finish. But there is subtlety too - grapefruit, pineapple (without the sweetness) and a distinct floral quality.

The aroma is earthy with a surprising amount of malt/bread. Take some time to breath it in slowly and a touch of mango reveals itself.
