Pound The Ground For Ultrasound 10k (Race Report)

Photo: Amey Johnson

After two years of sharing the same course as the Guthrie Gallop (a 32 year old Sayre Pa tradition), the Pound The Ground For Ultrasound 10k shifted half a mile East to Riverfront Park and morphed into a trail race for 2016.

As luck would have it, a couple of Friday afternoon downpours left most of the approximately 3 mile course (repeated twice) a slick and twisted trail runner's paradise. The course winds along the Susquehanna River on trails formerly used by local high school cross country teams, as well as a series of levees protecting the towns of Sayre and Athens. By next year's race this property will contain The Diahoga Trail, which will soon begin construction.

Although I did hike the course with some Valley Running Club friends on Tuesday, the 10k race, which supports the First Look Pregnancy Center, was my first run since completing the World's End Ultramarathon 50k (race report) seven days earlier.

Okay, so physically I felt like crap for most of the race. But you know what? As you can see from the photo above I got muddy and had a great time doing it. Muddy trail races a mile from home with friends, food, and cowbells for all finishers are not something to be missed. Make a little time to run this one next year...
