Samoa This Imperial Stout (Craft Beer Review)

Beer Review #199

Hello, hello! Welcome back to Beer Porn & More. Just one more written beer review until we pass that 200 review milestone, although we've already surpassed it for video reviews (HERE). Although the weather has been warming up recently, today i'm sinking my teeth into a decadent cold weather beer in the form of Samoa This, the latest in Southern Tier Brewing Company's Blackwater Series of dessert beers.

Like the other beers in this series (which I assume are mostly built on the same base brew) this thick, black imperial stout comes in at a whopping 10%ABV's of sweet, delectable craft beer goodness. Pitch black, thick, a stubborn head of khaki foam - these elements are all expected. But there is also plenty of new going on too.

This beer smells like a girl scout cookie. Huge notes of coconut share the spotlight with lesser degrees of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Think the sweet nostalgic aroma of a werther's original and a macadamia nut cookie.

All the above mentioned elements are present in the flavor, but a fair helping of dark roasted malt bitterness keeps the whole experiment from becoming disgusting - keeping it planted firmly in the neighborhood of what I consider to be 'enticing.'
